Boundaries of Fashion?

There are so many things wrong with this image, it’s hard to know where to start. This is a spread in the new issue of POP magazine, a publication which has a reputation for pushing the boundaries of fashion and keeping their readers on their toes. However, this fashion editorial, depicting a girl being choked by an unknown male has, in my opinion, gone way too far. For starters the American model, Hailey Clauson, is just 16 years old. This means that this spread not only shows a model sexualising and glamorizing domestic violence, but an underage one at that. If the creators of this editorial were questioned I'm sure that they would claim that the image should not be viewed literally but the fact is this is not art or fashion's response to domestic violence it is the promoter of it. I'm all for teasing the limits of fashion or creating pieces that spark debate and raise interesting questions when it is done intelligently. This has not. When it comes down to it, the editors need to think clearly about who is viewing these images and the message it is portraying.
